western front movie- pic 2

Filmed in Hollywood, All Quiet on the Western Front was released in 1930 and adapted from a novel by German author Erich Maria Remarque. The film follows a group of German schoolboys, talked into enlisting at the beginning of the First World War by their jingoistic teacher. The story is told entirely through the experiences of Paul and his fellow comrades and highlights the tragedy of war through the eyes of individuals. As the boys witness death and mutilation all around them, any preconceptions about “the enemy” and the “rights and wrongs” of the conflict disappear, leaving them angry and bewildered. This is highlighted in the scene where Paul mortally wounds a French soldier and then weeps bitterly as he fights to save his life while trapped in a shell crater with the body. The film is not about heroism but about drudgery and futility and the gulf between the concept of war and the actuality.

Beautiful weather for this years Ioco Ghost Town Day Event!

2015-10-04 14.58.14

We could not have asked for a better day for this year’s Ioco Ghost Town day event! The weather was fantastic and we had a lot of help from volunteers! We want to thank all the volunteers that helped with setting up the event and those that helped out at the many different booths! We could never run an event like this without you!

Thanks to Remax for the use of their hot air balloon and bouncy castle, the crowds loved them! Kinsmen Coquitlam worked hard in serving the delicious lunch and helped with set up and take down of all the tents! These guys worked hard throughout the day! To all the entertainers, thanks for making this a great day! A special thank you to The Syndicate, Dennis Hewson, Nigel Tucker, Joyce Johnstone and Theatrix for putting on great performances! For everyone who had a display, we are thankful that you were apart of this wonderful event and hope you had as much fun as we did.  We also want to say a big thank you to Gerrit deWall, Peter Hiebert, and Dave Maxwell for helping us throughout the weeks leading up to the event! Please look at our face book page to see photo’s from the event! Thank you to everyone!

hot air balloon

The Port Moody Heritage Society is proud to be holding our 14th annual Ioco Ghost Town Days this Sunday, October 4th at Ioco Road and 1st Avenue from 12-4. Don’t forget to bake a pie for the Ioco Church’s pie contest!!!They will also have delicious goodies at their bake sale!!!

There will be a few new things this year!

We will be having Trolley rides with guided historical tours of the Ioco Townsite! A Bouncy Castle and weather permitting a Hot Air Balloon!!!

hot air balloon

You will be able to watch the Hot Air Balloon get set up from 12-1, and then for 2 hours the Pilot will take 2 people at a time for a ride. The Hot Air Balloon will cost $20 per person , kids are also $20 and only 2 people are allowed in the balloon at a time. The carriage of passengers is left to the pilots discretion, as it is he/she  that is solely responsible for onsite safety. The height that the balloon will raise is dependent on wind conditions, but they can usually rise 30-50 feet. The length of each ride will also depend on the weather and on the number of passengers wanting to fly. In one hour, they can usually accommodate up to about 50-60 people. As suggested above, the decision to accept passengers is solely that of pilot. Once the balloon is inflated, he/she may decide to not accept passengers if the wind/weather conditions or the location are not ideal.

This is a new thing we are trying this year and we are very excited to have the Remax Hot Air Balloon at the event but please be aware that a ride is not guaranteed. If you buy a ticket, and the Remax pilot decides that the weather is not suitable or that he/she no longer wants to fly for any reason your money will be returned to you.   We hope everyone that wants to gets a ride but again there is no guarantee!

More things at the event….

There will be an artist cafe, lots of artisan displays and Kinsmen will be running the concession. $5.00 for lunch which includes one Bratswoth, pasta salad, coleslaw and a drink or $1 if you only want  a drink.

The Syndicate will perform on the main stage throughout the day
